When it is necessary to obtain probate of a will in Ontario, probate fees must be paid to the government of Ontario.
Probate fees are calculated on the value of the estate in the following manner:
- $5.00 for every $1,000 of estate assets up to $50,000, and
- $15 for every $1,000 of estate assets over $50,000
For example, for an estate valued at $75,000, probate fees in the amount of $625 must be paid. For an estate valued at $500,000, probate fees in the amount of $7,000 must be paid.
