What to do if you’ve been Injured

When you or someone you love is injured, take the following steps as soon as possible:

  • Consult a Doctor – Go to the hospital or see your family doctor to make sure that you get the medical care you need to recover from your injury.
  • Keep a Diary – Use a diary to keep an ongoing record of how the injury has impacted your life. Track of your day to day progress by noting pain, difficulty sleeping, headaches, etc.
  • Witness Information – Obtain the names, addresses and telephone numbers of witnesses.
  • Photograph the Site – Take photographs of the location where you were injured. If there was debris that caused your accident, or a defect such as a hole that caused you to injure yourself, take a photograph of this as well.
  • Photograph your Injuries – Take photographs of your injuries.
  • Notify Police and Emergency Medical Personnel – If you or someone that you love you is injured in a car accident, contact police and emergency medical personnel immediately to make sure that you receive the medical attention you need and to ensure that information about the accident and the other parties involved is property documented by the police.
  • Provide Notice – Depending on the circumstances of your injury it may be necessary to provide immediate “notice” to a city, township or other owner of property where an accident occurs in order to preserve your right to advance a personal injury claim.
